Aid Station Types

  • Major – First aid, Fluids. Full variety of food & gels. Well staffed.
  • Minor – First aid, Fluids. Limited variety of nutrition. Light staff.
  • Micro – Fluids, self-service as no staff, just critters.

Leg Details  

  • On the maps, you'll see a bunch of skinny blue lines; these are cross-trails, also known as: places to get off-course. PLEASE PAY ATTENTION TO THE COURSE MARKINGS AND SIGNAGE, you'll enjoy the run more if you follow the course...  
  • Leg Maps (below) include a description of what you'll be running on as you navigate between Aid Stations
  • The course is segmented into "legs." Each leg starts and ends at an Aid Station.

Mike's Dance Barn to Playground 
Major Aid

“Can’t stop the slime, people, lookit me go” -Frank Zappa.

South down dirt road to Shipley’s Cut-Thru. Watch out for dogs. Please, no beef jerky in your shorts. Super soupy slime climb, 1.9 miles. Left-E on Ten O’clock Line (horse trail G). Fairly flat and fast 2-track to the campground. Total 3.75 miles.

Goat Note: “Be very aware as it is no fun getting lost early. Wait until later.”

Dog Drool: “Yuck until top o’ the hill then smooth sailing into Playground Aid.”

26.2 #2a Playground to Ogle Lake Minor Aid
“Well I'm going down - Down, down, down, down, down. I'm going down - Down, down, down, down, down.

Left-West (not like last year) from aid station on paved road through Taylor Ridge Campground to Trail 9 entrance (bathroom on left). Straight-West on Trail 9. Relaxing downhill, stay straight at split and merger. Fabulous trail with intense downhills, a stream crossing, a couple of uphill crushers, and another screaming downhill to Ogle Lake Dam. Ignore Blue and White flags.

Across the dam, 50M/50K ultras turn Right-East onto Trail 7, north alongthe lake. Marathon turns Left-West toward restrooms and through playground to Trail 8. Total 7 miles.

On North side of dam, 50M/50K ultras Right-East onto Trail 7. Stairs, slippery flat rocks and roots to keep you on your toes. A bit tricky to follow in the middle. Gradual but significant climps up to Hoosier's Nest. Total 50M/50K 10.5 miles.

From Ogle Dam stay left toward restrooms and through playground to Trail 8. Do not take right on Ultra and Relay pink on Trail 7. Mostly uphill trail followed by extended stairway climb. Ultra and marathon courses converge just before crossing road to Hesitation Point. Take in the magnificant view. Hesitate and hydrate but don't procrastinate or regurgitate. Total Marathon 8.5 miles.

Hoosier's Nest to Hesitation Point

Technical, extreme mountain bike trail with lots of tricky descents, slippery rocks and hesitation switchbacks.  Foot focus is at a premium as root, rock and roll is being played loudly by the dirt gods. Ultra and Marathon converge just before crossing road over to Hesitation Point. Take in the magnificent view.  Hesitate and hydrate but don’t procrastinate or regurgitate.

Hesitation Point to Aynes House

Solid bike trails with a few knee bucklers and other wicked elements. High focus needed to manage the zillion bends and downers. The upper to Aynes house is so intense it may send you to rehab.

Aynes House to North Tower Minor Aid
There must be some kind of way out of here, Said the joker to the thief. There’s too much confusion, I can’t get no relief”- Bob Dylan
Difficulty is all in your attitude: A - Solid mountain bike trails with exceptional views or B- Feels like there is no way out and no relief. The pink ribbon is the way out of here to the north watchtower. Minimal support parking.

North Tower to Fire Tower

Definitely hard, cold hearted and mean. Plus wet in places and with very tough climbs. No shortcuts this year. Don’t disturb the romantics like the head goat did. Take it as a personal challenge to warm up the Devil’s Daughter. Our bet is she will break you!

Stairway to Heaven – 4.4 miles PINK
50/50 #8 26.2 #6 Fire Tower to Playground via Nature Center Major Aid Decision Point
“There’s a feeling I get when I look to the west and my spirit is crying for leaving.  In my thoughts I have seen, rings of smoke through the trees and the voices of those who stand looking.” -Led Zeppelin
Extreme focus leaving the aid station is needed. Serious descents, horse pucky, poor footing, bushwhacking.  and quad quivering hills. 
Take the Stairway to Heaven to the Nature Center where “a new day will dawn for those who stand long, and the forests will echo in laughter." Nature Center is Relay exchange point and excellent Handler site.
Continue on the nice easy road 1.25 miles back to the Playground Aid Station. Les friser l'indécision provides an excellent opportunity to reflect, have a beer & a smoke and access your health.


Playground is the Ultra Decision Point

  • DECISION POINT – 50M/50K split - Playground Aid Station
  • First Loop is done! 27.35 miles
  • 50K and Marathon depart left/South on 2-track & heads to Finish
  • 50M departs straight/West on campground road to Trail 9 and more fun.
  • Optional Event Switch
    • Inform the volunteers if you feel it's in your best interest to switch one Ultra passport to the other (50M to 50K.)
  • Mandatory Event Switch
    • 50 Mile Passport expires at 1:30 p.m.
    • Arrivals after 1:30 are switched to 50K.
    • The 50Mile course unmarking begins at 1:30 p.m., better stay in front of us.
  • If you switch, you will get a 50K finish but not be eligible for awards (due to the different 50K start time.)

Playground to Mike's Dance Barn

Marathon and 50K runners Left-South on 2-track from Playground Aid. 50M stays Straigh-West on campground road to Trail 9 - if before 1:30pm. After 1:30pm, everybody turns LEFT to Mike's. Good recovery section that may bring your legs back to life on the flat 2-track and crusty horse trail. Down the Slime Hill to Mike's Dance Barn.

Dog Drool: “So, Yeah, we've been trying to keep anybody from going back down the Slime for years with less than complete success. So now this year, we want you to go that way? WTF!”
Goat Note: Congratulations, you are one tough customer. You’ve earned a Big Woods brew or 2!

Playground to Hesitation Point Major Aid

From Playground  Aid stay Straight-West on campground road to Trail 9 only if before 1:30pm. After 1:30pm, all are switched to 50K.
Your reward for crossing that line and surrendering to the long run is the nicest trail in Indiana. First 1.5 miles will provide recovery to your legs with gradual downhills and stable footing. Great trails including the whoop-de-whoo downhills to Ogle Lake and extended climbs to Hesitation Point. After crossing Ogle Lake dam, turn Left-West toward restrooms and onto Trail 8, up to Hesitation Point. Total 31.9 miles.

50M #13 Fire Tower thru Nature Center to Playground

Extreme focus leaving the aid station is needed, staying along the shoulder for short period. DO NOT CROSS ROAD. Watch for quick turns from one tral onto another. Serious descents, horse pucky, poor footing, bushwhacking.  and quad quivering hills. 
Take the Stairway to Heaven to the Nature Center where “a new day will dawn for those who stand long, and the forests will echo in laughter." Nature Center is Relay exchange point and excellent Handler site. Ignore Blue and White ribbons. Continue on the nice easy road 1.25 miles back to the Playground Aid Station. Total 46.67 miles

Second Loop is done! 46.67 miles. Based on 13 hour maximum finish time, the cut off time here is 6:30pm. Can you make it down 3.75 miles in 45 minutes?
